Curation Labs inspire students to become passionate about writing.

The Curation Lab Process:

  • involves students as readers, writers, listeners and speakers

  • provides a way for teachers to collect and curate personalized anthologies of mentor texts including student writing.

Preparation:

  • Submission, selection and preparation of genre-based reading packets (6-10 pieces)

  • Planning of reading times: Will students read at home and then re-read in class or do all reading in class?

Structure and Timing

  1. Introduction (5 - 10 minutes)

  2. Individual Reading and Note-taking (15-20 minutes)

  3. Small Group (table) Discussion and Ranking (10-15 minutes)

  4. Curation 1: Whole Class Discussion and Ranking (20-30 minutes - end of first part of the lab)

  5. Writing: Students produce a piece in the genre applying something they learned about good writing

  6. Curation 2: Students participate in the lab again with student-written pieces of writing

  7. Optional Extension: Students write reflective pieces about what they are learning about writing.
